You never really know what you’re going to get with a Ryan Murphy production but one thing you can usually count on is moment of outrageousness. It’s hard to imagine that the same guy behind Glee could also the same guy behind American Horror Story until Scream Queens came out this year. Then it all makes sense.
Then comes news that he has taken the helm of the new American Crime Story for FX. Similar in title to American Horror Story, this limited series is also similar in that it will borrow the concept of creating one story for a number of weeks per season. The show will be more of a mini-series. If everything goes to plan, the new show will focus on a number of real cases that rocked America.
The first season, titled The People v. O.J. Simpson, is based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson, so it will be interesting to see if the true story alone will be outrageous enough by itself or if Murphy will have to doctor it.
According to the press release, “American Crime Story is a limited series that takes you inside the O.J. Simpson trial with a riveting look at the legal teams battling to convict or acquit the football legend of double homicide.”
In 1994, news broke out that Nicole Brown Simpson, O.J.’s ex-wife, was brutally murdered along with a friend, Ronald Goldman in her home. Days later, live news coverage took place of one of the slowest police chases ever. O.J. was driving a white van and wouldn’t pull over for police. The event was a circus from the beginning and as it turns out, things weren’t much better on the other side of the cameras either. American Crime Story hopes to capture this spirit and will try present the “chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court.” Back then, names like Marcia Clark and Robert Shapiro became household names. This show aims to give viewers a better idea on just who these people were.
American Crime Story also promises a huge cast of stars, some we haven’t seen on screen for a while now. The surprises include Cuba Gooding, Jr., John Travolta and David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian. That’s right. “Ross” will be playing role of the Kardashian sisters’ father!
The complete cast includes:
- Cuba Gooding, Jr. as O. J. Simpson
- Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clark
- John Travolta as Robert Shapiro
- David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian

For those not old enough to know better, O.J. Simpson was once considered on the nicest and football players in American history. He was a favorite of many. He played 11 seasons with the Buffalo Bills from 1969 to 1977 and the San Francisco 49ers from 1978 to 1979. As nobody could deny his charming smile, Simpson had a number of endorsement deals with his Hertz Rental Car being the most notable. They usually featured Simpson running through an airport as if it were a football field.
Simpson was a fairly good actor and appeared in The Klansman (1974), The Towering Inferno (1974), The Cassandra Crossing (1976) and Capricorn One (1978). He also got a chance to show his comedic side in Back to the Beach (1987) and The Naked Gun trilogy (1988, 1991, 1994). Simpson also starred in a TV pilot for NBC called The Frogmen. However, the public never saw it as it was scheduled to air a few months after the death of Nicole Simpson.
Feeling very confident with this new venture, the second season of American Crime Story is already in development and the focus for season two will be on Hurricane Katrina and what happened after it hit the shores of New Orleans. Like the first season, the un-named season two will focus on six or eight people hoping to explain all sides of the issue. The production of season two is expected to being in the fall of this year and will share events that happened in the Superdome, the hospital and those left wandering the streets. No casts announcements have been made as of yet.
Season one of American Crime Story premieres on Tuesday, February 2, 2016.
